I am MSc. GATE is Useful for Me if I Qualify?

GATE Results are out now for 2019.

Most of the MSc Students particularly Biotech, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Botany and Zoology must be thinking

What is the use for me if I qualify GATE ?

- One can attend PhD Interviews directly IITs if you have 90 or above percentile.

- Apply for IISERs/NISER

- Can work as Project Assistant or JRF in Projects funded by CSIR/DBT/DST/ICMR etc.

- May be one can register for PhD in some Universities Directly.

- finally, It is good for your CV

Always may sure that u don’t have gaps in your career. Get into some thing, start as Project Assistant and try to qualify CSIR JRF.

Any Suggestions?

  7. ya gate use ful but better keep the score and try for csir jrf one more year if not use the fresh gate score are valid score of past year and try to join in good university for PhD BUT SELECT advance industrial oriented research or environmental related topic so that if u fail to get a job in research labs as scientist there are many biotech industries taking FRESH PhD STUDENTS but they are looking for industrial oriented research and the pay scale is good starting from 20 + and use full for academics teaching part time.

  8. Dear Sir,

I am an MSc student and GATE qualified with 99.78 percentile. I have CSIR - LS till now. My question is that can I use my GATE score to draw a fellowship equivalent to csir/ugc jrf? I know there is a CSIR GATE fellowship scheme but I dont know whether an MSc student can apply for GATE fellowship.
    Please help

    ReplyDelete
  9. Congrats...

U can use GATE score to draw fellowship. Not sure similar, but almost equal.

Btech people are eligible for that scheme.

  10. my percentile is 86.4 in GATE 2012 life sciences.i know it is a bad score for life sciences.can i apply for phd in any institute with this?

  11. MSc GATE qualified students are not eligible for CCMB selections (They mention clearly that MSc GATE qualified need not apply ).

However it doesnt mean that GATE has no value
I feel GATE score was under estimated by most of the students
Every IIT is asking GATE score and many institues are there which take PhD admission on GATE basis
The only thing is that u need higher percentile i.e more than 95

    I got 128 rank with 98.8 percentile

  12. and one more thing CSIR-GATE Fellowship is for students who have 4yr course i.e BE/Btech

MSc candidates not eligible for CSIR-GATE Fellowship

  14. People who qualify GATE exam are eligible to apply in IISc and IIT . But the teal problem comes when the cut off is too high .So no need to worry much as there is always a second better chance. If you do not come in the cut off list, than do start preparing for NET_JRF again because there is always a second better chance. Also one more suggestion rather than droping out and preparing for exam do join some insititute as PA to avoid any gap in your carrer

  15. thank you for all the above information..I have 95.97 percentile in GATE biotech 2012, will I be eligible for Phd at IITs and in most of the forms I have filled till now they have just asked to mention the gate score, dont they ask for the percentile?

  19. hi..
i saw this post and thought i could write something from my experience..I have qualified gate with 91 percentile but no CSIR NET. what i have noticed is... IITs and IISC shortlists students with 90 percentile and above, rest depends on ur cv and interview skills. You can try for project vacancies availble as a JRF if the project aloows for GATE and many other institutes and universities allow to apply for phd with gate..just search for them. but luck runs out if someone comes with NET for the same post. Also if somebdy has research experience after MSc they stand a chance ...i got a call from two IITS and CCMB but couldnt make it coz NET people were there too.. so i would suggest if someone gets a call from a institute far away from home, think twice if u really need to go..or u may feel ur time has been wasted...

    1. i dont agree. i had cleared JGEEBILS. and GATE buty GATE score was really bad. i got call from iiser pune and ncbs bangalore based on my SOP. but i could not cleae interviews. nevertheless. 2 other frnds of mine, without csir net cleared ncbs. what i gather is more tgan fellowship, they are looking for ppl with deep k owledge of the subject and a mind that can tackle research independently.
as for me my interview experience was very good. ncbs reimbursed my travel expense (t. a) and also gave d. a
once you attend interview you get an idea where you stand and what you have to do to get somewhere you want.

  22. I am a PI with a DST-funded project. My institution does not have a PhD programme. I need to hire a project assistant (PA) or JRF to work on this project. I have received applications from candidates with good GATE scores (but who have not qualified NET). It seems from one of the posts above that such candidates can join me as either PA or JRF. If so, can they draw fellowship through their own GATE fellowship to work on my project which may not lead to PhD? Thanks in advance for your answers.
