CSIR Doubles Number of JRF-NET Fellowships for Science Students

helpBIOTECH CSIR JRF/NET June 2012 Coaching

The increase in intake of JRF-NET fellowships with good remuneration would help in attracting talented youth to take up scientific research as a career

In a good news for students of the science stream, Government on Thursday decided to double the number of scholarships to 12,000 for doctoral studies in science.

The increase in intake of JRF-NET fellowships with good remuneration would help in attracting talented youth to take up scientific research as a career
The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved a proposal for increase in the number of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) through CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) in the country.

“The main objective of the JRF-NET is to identify talented students who could be enrolled for Ph.D programmes in specific science domains, across the country’s scientific and academic institutions,” a government spokesman said.

The CSIR had decided to offer 6,000 Junior Research Fellowships during the Tenth Plan period and the same has been increased two-fold for the Eleventh Plan.

The total cost of providing fellowships to about 12,000 students in the Eleventh Plan is estimated at Rs 444.34 crore.

The increase in intake of JRF-NET fellowships with good remuneration would help in attracting talented youth to take up scientific research as a career, the spokesman said. It would also help address the issues related to shortage of scientific manpower in the country, he added.

Universities and scientific institutions are expected to be the biggest beneficiaries of this initiative as they would be able to attract bright minds for their scientific programmes.

5th National Training Workshop on IMMUNOLOGICALTECHNIQUES

May 3 - 15, 2010

Organized by

image Centre for Fish Immunology
PG Department of Zoology and Biotechnology

Lady Doak College (Autonomous)
MADURAI
The Workshop

There is no frontier area in life science that has remained untouched by Immunology. Immunology plays rather a dominant role in modern biological, medical and veterinary sciences. The driving force for such a role is the need to understand the  immunological basis of large number of infectious and other diseases; to develop effective prophylactic vaccines and immunomodulators for existing and newer infectious and other diseases of humans, cattle, poultry and fish; to practice immunotherapy involving cytokines like interleukins and interferons and antibody engineering products like chimeric / humanized monoclonal antibodies, plantibodies and immunotoxins and also to use immunological tests for diagnosis.

The subject of immunology has been introduced in undergraduate and postgraduate curricula of all the life science disciplines including biotechnology, in science, engineering and technology institutions. Immunology is also a valued subject in medicine, veterinary science, agriculture and fisheries. The institutions offering immunology have frequently expressed constraints in terms of facilities and trained manpower particularly in the laboratory component of immunology courses. Similarly, doctoral students and young scientists in universities and research institutions also want to use immunological techniques in their research, expressed the need for training in immunology techniques. In response to these expressions and recommendations for human resource development in immunology of the central scientific funding agencies including DST and DBT, PG and Research Department of Zoology and Biotechnology, Lady Doak College, which has identified immunology as a thrust area for study and research, is organizing this Training Workshop on Immunological Techniques.

Content

The workshop is aimed at imparting hands on-training in most of the key immune mechanisms enabling the participants to assess the immune  responses at cellular and molecular levels.

The training would include techniques such as

1. Raising and isolation of antibodies.
2. Assessing humoral immune (antibody) response (ELISA, Agglutination, Immunodiffusion, Immunoelectrophoresis, Western/Immuno blot etc.)
3. Assessing cellular immune responses (DTH response, allograft rejection)
4. Assessing nonspecific humoral immune mechanisms such as serum Antiprotease, Myeloperoxidase, Haemolysin, Alternate Complement and Lysozyme activities.
5. Assessing nonspecific cellular immune mechanisms especially phagocytic killing mechanisms such as ROS, RNS and Myeloperoxidase  production.

Daily laboratory session will be preceeded by a lecture on a current topic in Immunology by an eminent scientist.

Who needs it?

College / University faculty fellows and young scientists interested in demonstrating / doing immunological techniques in their classes / studies will greatly benefit from this workshop.
The workshop is specifically planned and geared for the participants to have hands on training in these techniques.

Registration

Filled in registration forms should reach the Convener by post / email / fax on or before April 15, 2010. Only limited seats are available.

Deserving candidates will be selected on first come first served basis. Selected candidates should pay a registration fee of Rs.5000/- through DD drawn in favour of The Treasurer, KWEA, Madurai after the confirmation of admission by the organizers over phone, email or fax. Registration fee covers workshop kit, working lunch and refreshments. The workshop kit includes a lab manual and writing accessories.
