Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education is a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), devoted to research and development in science, mathematics and technology education (STME). It is seeking to strengthen its programmes, particularly,

(1) Research in STME at school level
(2) Olympiads in chemistry, biology, mathematics and other subjects and
(3) The national initiative on undergraduate science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology).


We are keen to consider applications for faculty positions at appropriate levels (Fellow (E) or higher) from candidates with a Ph.D. and post-doctoral experience and a proven excellent track record in any of the following:
• the natural sciences, with a demonstrated interest in educational and social issues.
• the social sciences, with a demonstrated interest in educational and science/design/technology issues.
• research and development in science, mathematics or design and technology education.

We are looking for young people who combine a basic training in the natural sciences with a lively interest in society, technology or the arts, to explore issues in school and college education.
HBCSE carries out research and development in education in science, technology and mathematics from primary school up to undergraduate level. This research is informed by current perspectives in cognitive science, developmental psychology, history and philosophy of science and socio-cultural aspects of science and education. Pre-Ph.D. programmes in these areas serve to orient students who may enter with varied backgrounds.

Practising science and maths teachers are welcome to apply. They would spend a minimum of two years at HBCSE in order to complete their course work and initiate their research work.

Note: This is a programme in education. It is not a pure or applied science research programme.

Admissions are made initially for one year, renewable annually up to a maximum of five years. 

A monthly fellowship of Rs 12,000 is offered, enhanced to Rs 14,000 after registration for Ph.D. In addition, a contingency grant of Rs 15,000 and a tuition grant of Rs 4000 per annum are available. Accommodation may be provided on campus at nominal cost. In lieu of accommodation HRA amounting to 30% of the fellowship will be paid.

Description

Responsibilities include,
· Searching - Conducts intellectual property, literature and/or current awareness searches for business and technical information using appropriate information sources, such as on-line databases, Internet and hardcopy published information. Qualifications
*MS or PhD or equivalent degree in a scientific discipline, preferably the plant sciences: genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry/physiology, etc. Research experience will be added advantage.

* Have searching experience, preferably in sequence searching using paid and / or free databases.
Understanding of Basic Intellectual Property Principles and the Role and Structure of Patents
* Understanding of the principles of patent prosecution.

Description 

The successful candidate will join the regulatory science group as a research scientist to lead the technical writing capabilities and manage third party biosafety studies to support the regulatory submission of biotechnology derived crops.
1. Works in conjunction with regulatory science team to establish project goals consistent with business unit goals.
2. The successful candidate will lead writing regulatory submissions including but not limited to regulatory applications, field trial reports, report generations from studies conducted both in house as well as outsourced biosafety studies.

Applications are invited for Summer Research Program 2010 at IISER Mohali.

Students completing first year of their MSc program or those completing 2nd year/3rd year of BSc, will be able to spend 2 months at IISER Mohali during the summer, in order to work on specific research projects with IISER faculty.

The principle objective of the program is to provide exposure to research methodology and a research environment to bright students. This exposure to excitement in different scientific fields is expected to motivate them to take up careers in science.

Guide lines for the the Summer Research Program
a) Dates: The summer program will run between 15th May, 2010 and 15th July, 2010. The exact starting dates are flexible to some extent. Selected students are advised to contact their supervisors and fix up a starting date. However, a student's stay at IISER Mohali should include the period between 1st and 30th June, 2010.
b) Duration: The minimum period of summer research is one month and can be extended up to a maximum period of two months.
c) The Program: The summer program has two components-
(a) Research: which the student will carry out in consultation with his/her supervisor and
(b) Interdisciplinary Course Work: which will involve a series of lectures to be delivered by scientists working in various fields. The course is scheduled for the period of 1st and 30th June 2010 and all the students selected for summer program are required to attend it.
At the end of the summer program, students are required to submit a report about their research. All students who successfully complete the summer program will receive a certificate from IISER Mohali. Students who perform very well during the summer program will receive additional Merit Certificates.
d) Fellowship: Students will receive a fellowship of Rs. 5000.00 (Rupees Five Thousand only) per month. Students will also be paid second class train fare for their journey to IISER Mohali and return.
e) Accommodation and food: If necessary, IISER Mohali can provide accommodation and food at IISER Mohali student hostels on payment basis

    Biotechnology Research and Training Cell (BRTC), JECRC has designed and developed the Training and Dissertation Programs. Using our vast resources and experience in Biotechnology, BRTC has developed projects that will be tailored to suit individual skill levels.

    BEST-India (Biotechnology Entrepreneurship Student Teams) is aimed at encouraging young postgraduate and doctoral students in developing biotechnology entrepreneurship and exposing them to issues involved in commercialization of bio-science.

    BEST is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (www.dbtindia.nic.in), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and is administered by ABLE - India (www.ableindia.org)

    Eligibility-:


    Applicants must be students who are pursuing their masters, doctoral degree, BE or B Tech courses in the area of life sciences (bioscience / biotechnology and/or related subjects) from Indian universities / Institutes.

    Students of the above disciplines who have completed their courses not earlier than April 2009 can also participate.

    The applicants should form a team of 5 students and nominate a team leader. The individual team members may or may not be from the same Institute/University. One third of the team members can be from disciplines other than life sciences.

    Teams who have participated in BEST 2009 can also take part but with a different concept idea.

    Each team will submit only one entry.

    Core biotechnology disciplines under which Concept Notes will be invited include Agriculture, Aquaculture, Alternate Energy/Bio-energy, Bioinformatics, Biological Applications, Bioprocess Engineering, Environment, Food, Human Resource Development, Medical, Medical Diagnostics, Medical devices, Medical Therapeutics, Nanobiology/Nanobiotechnology, Vaccines.

    The proposals could be either for product, service or an application.

    The 3 Winning teams will also be awarded Prize money of Rs.500,000/-, Rs. 300,000/- and Rs. 200,000/ respectively.

    General Conditions:-
    The Discipline of Marine Biotechnology and Ecology of CSMCRI, Bhavnagar is actively engaged in multidisciplinary research in frontier areas of modern biology and biotechnology. Some of the ongoing/new projects (sponsored by CSIR, DBT, etc) of the Discipline for which we wish to recruit 10 Junior Research Fellows and 2 Project Assistants (level –IV) are:
    · Cloning and characterization of stress-responsive genes, promoter isolation and development of transgenic crop plants
    · Climate change and adaptation- Phenology and population dynamics of halophytes
    · Environmental monitoring (sea, sediments and inland areas)
    · Mapping of marine biodiversity (seaweeds and marine microbes) using molecular tools and techniques.
    Age: Not more than 28 years as on interview date (relaxation as per CSIR rules).

    Junior Research Fellow : MSc in any branch of Biological Sciences with a minimum of 60% marks in all qualifying examination (10th, 12th, B.Sc and M.Sc). Practical experience in protein isolation and characterization will be an added qualification.

    Junior Research Fellow : Rs. 8,000/- (fixed) per month

    Duration : One year or till termination of the project (whichever is earlier).
