Details of projects and positions

RA – 1 Post
Duration: One year.
Essential Qualification

  1. Ph. D. in Botany (Plant Systematics or Ecology) from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification

  1. Experience of field work related to survey of flora and fauna in Western Himalaya, especially orchids and medicinal plants.

  2. Proficiency in computer applications, data compilation and processing and knowledge on photo editing, DTP and publication.
Description of Work
The Kailash Sacred Landscape (KSL) project at WII, in collaboration with the GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development (GBPIHED), Almora and Uttarakhand Forest Department, deals with development of trans-boundary framework for conservation and sustainable development in the India part of Greater Kailash Landscape. Under this project WII plans to collate available information on the rare and threatened plant and animal communities / individual species of flora and fauna for district Pithoragarh and develop long term monitoring protocol for these components.
The RA would be required to carry out the following specific tasks:

  1. Prepare a computerized database on the distribution, status, habitat and threats  of endangered and threatened species of flora and fauna for KSL

  2. Collate information on the status of high value medicinal plants and orchids in KSL

  3. Compile information on the extraction and trade of Non-timber Forest Produce and trans-boundary trade on these products

  4. Develop long term monitoring protocol for the rare and threatened species and habitats for KSL (India part).
Ecology of leopard (Panthera pardus) in relation to prey abundance and land-use pattern in Kashmir Valley.

Duration: Three years.
Essential Qualification
Masters Degree in Wildlife Biology/Wildlife Science/Environmental Science/ Forestry/Forest Management with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Experience in herbivore and carnivore population estimation, radio tracking, and GIS & Remote Sensing.
Description of Work
The project aims to study ranging, movement patterns, habitat use and food habits of leopards, estimation of prey species, study human-animal conflict and suggest detailed management guidelines for conservation in and around Dachigam National Park, Srinagar, Kashmir.
Wildlife Forensic Cell.
(1 – JRF)
Duration: One Year.
Essential Qualification
Masters Degree in Wildlife Science/Forensic Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Experience in identification of species based on morphological features from bones, feather, hair, and other items. Good knowledge in biostatistics and multivariate analysis.
Description of Work
The JRF is required to develop protocols for identification of species from morphological features of different items reported in the trade like skins, feathers, bones, paint brushes etc., and to provide assistance in dealing with wildlife offence cases.
General

  1. Candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA-I) should be below 40 years of age as on 10th August 2010 and the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST. For the position of JRF, the age shall not be more than 28 years as on 10th August 2010. Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women/physically handicapped categories.

  2. Selected candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA-I) will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 22,000/- per month and selected candidate for the position of Junior Research Fellow will be paid a consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month. In case of NET qualified candidates (UGC/CSIR) for Research Fellows, the selected JRF will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 16,000/- per month and in case of NET qualified (UGC/CSIR) candidates with Professional P.G. Degree, he/she will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 18,000/- per month as fellowship.

  3. Selected candidates may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.

  4. Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project/cell.

  5. The selection of the candidates will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Thursday, 12th August 2010 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registration of candidates will begin by 09:30 A.M. onwards.

Qualifications.

Project : “Molecular Identification and Characterization of virulence factors of tomato leaf curl virus”.
Duration: The Project will continue till December, 2013. The above mentioned position is completely temporary and is co-terminus with the project. The initial appointment will be for a period of one year, but can be curtailed or extended based on the performance and discretion of the Competent Authority. Appointed person will be expected to stay in the lab for the entire period of the project.

Qualification required : 1st Class M.Sc in Life Sciences.

Desirable Experience : Experience in Molecular Biology Techniques (Expression & Purification of recombinant protein) Immunology assay methods, Cell Culture etc.
