Barwale Foundation Workshop on Breeding Enablement Technologies

helpBIOTECH Happy to Announce:

10th Hands-on Training-cum-Workshop on  "Breeding Enablement Technologies"

December 13-17, 2010

Barwale Foundation
Barwale Chambers, Street No.1 0,
Himayathnagar,
Hyderabad 500 029, A.P., India.

Advancement decisions in any breeding program are the pivotal nodes. To take these decisions, a breeder needs several inputs as well as appropriate analyses and interpretation of the data gathered on phenotypes on one hand and an accurate genotypic grid on the other. The gamut of technologies that aid the breeder in this process are collectively referred to as Breeding Enablement Technologies (BET).

Marker Aided Breeding (MAB) is a classic example of BET supported strongly by the OMICs platforms, such as Genomics, Transcriptomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics and Phenomics. Breeding Informatics provides breeders with tools to obtain reliable association between phenotypes and genotypes, thereby enabling more accurate advancement decisions. In vitro techniques such as doubled haploidy which enable the breeder to cut down the generation cycles, the micro- propagation that enhances the multiplication rate are valuable tools too. Transcending the technologies that handle existing variability the ability to generate and monitor transgenic plants via transgenosis has extended the breeders repertoire still further.

Realizing the importance of phenotyping in establishing the accuracy of marker trait associations, the Barwale Foundation is conducting its 10th Training-cum-Workshop with primary focus on Breeding Enablement Technologies. The participants will gain hands on experience in different relevant techniques. Moving away from long lectures and demonstrations these will be mostly interactive sessions. This workshop will serve as a platform and help all participants to come up with novel ideas through interactions and networking.

Conference on "Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2011" Aquaculture- the future is here

17-20 January, 2011

Le Meridien Resort and Convention Centre, Kochi, India

Hostedby: College of Fisheries (Kerala Agricultural University), Kochi Dept. of Fisheries (Govt. of Kerala

Conference Theme:

The Theme for APA 2011 isAquaculture: the Future is here’. it signifies the important role aquaculture must play in meeting the food security challenges facing human population in the immediate future.

True to these expectations, Aquaculture is presently the fastest growing food production sector in the world. In global trade, fish is the fastest growing among agricultural commodities. As a food commodity, fish and fishery products represent one of the most valuable and nutritious food item for mankind, containing most of the essential nutrients for human health and wellbeing. In value terms, the growth of trade in fish and fishery products in the world is greater than the increase in net exports of other staple agricultural commodities such as rice, tea, coffee, banana etc.

Global production of fish was 145 million tonnes in 2006 (FAO, 2009), of which aquaculture contributed nearly 50%. Almost 90% of the aquaculture production came from the Asia-Pacific region, dominated by fish produced from freshwater. India’s contribution to world’s aquaculture production is significant and the country ranks second in world aquaculture production. In India, the percentage aquaculture contribution is nearly 45 percent (3.12 million tonnes) of the total fish production of 7 million tonnes, inland and freshwater aquaculture being the major contributors.

APA 2011 will provide the best place for all global players in aquaculture to assemble and discuss the opportunities aquaculture presents to meet the emerging challenges to global food security.

Important Dates:
The dates of the APA 2011 and GP 2011 meetings are:
APA 2011 opening ceremonies : 17 January 2011
APA 2011 : 18, 19 and 20 January 2011
GP 2011 invited session : 18, 19 and 20 January 2011
APA2011 farm visits/Scenic Tours : 21 January 2011
GP 2011 post conference farm visits : 21 and 22 January 2011
Giant Prawn 2011 will be held in one of the session rooms of the APA 2011 meeting and will be a full three-day event, followed by farm visits on 21 and 22 January. In addition to the 3-day invited session of GP2011 there will be a one-day parallel session for unsolicited (submitted) papers on freshwater prawn (any species) farming.
