NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON (ACCT-2011) ANIMAL CELL CULTURE TECHNIQUES

March 18-20, 2011

image DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
Annamalai University
Annamalainagar 608 002, Tamil Nadu

Workshop Background Cell culture has become one of the major tools used in life sciences today. Cell cultures provide a good model system for studying

1) basic cell biology and biochemistry,
2) the interactions between disease-causing agents and cells,
3) the effects of drugs on cells and
4) the process and trigger for aging.

Liver and kidney-derived cell lines are widely used alone or in conjunction with animal tests to study the effects of new drugs, cosmetics and chemicals on survival and growth in a wide variety of cell types. Since both normal cells and cancer cells can be grown in culture, the basic differences between them can also be closely studied. In addition, it is possible, by the use of chemicals, viruses and radiation, to convert normal cultured cells to transformed cells. Cultured cancer cells also serve as a test system to determine suitable drugs and methods for cancer treatment. One of the earliest and major uses of cell culture is the replication of viruses in cell cultures (in place of animals) for use in vaccine production. Cell cultures are also widely used in the clinical detection and isolation of viruses, as well as basic research into how they grow and infect organisms. Cell-based assays have become increasingly important for the pharmaceutical industry, not only just for cytotoxicity testing but also for high throughput screening of compounds that may have potential use as drugs. In this background the present workshop is designed to provide a hands-on training in basic animal cell culture techniques and to emphasize application of animal cell culture techniques in anticancer drug screening.

Program Schedule

Morning session: 9.00 am to 1.00 pm (with a 15 min tea break)
Lunch: 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm
Afternoon session 2.00 pm to 6 pm (with a 15 min tea break)

Workshop Program Besides hands-on training, participants will be encouraged to carry out the techniques themselves. The workshop will be conducted for 15 participants. This cell culture workshop will cover lectures and hands-on experience on v Basics in animal cell cultivation

helpBIOTECH Happy to Announce:

National Symposium On  Emerging Trends In Plant Sciences

3rd- 4th March 2011

BHUDepartment of Botany
Banaras Hindu University(BHU)
Varanasi-221005

In Plant Biology, even the area of basic biology has become one of the most exciting areas to work with, just because of the emerging trends and techniques that has made the study of plants more convenient and interesting. Even in the field of cytogenetics very rapid progress has been made on a number of fronts in recent years. Cytogenetics now advances through developments in basic biology, instrumentation, microscopy, computational analysis, cytochemistry and biochemistry. Likewise, besides fundamental uses in unraveling the mysteries of nature & global climate change, genome biodiversity assessment also has far reaching implications in the well being of mankind.

The advent of genomics-based technologies has provided the ability to address biological questions or altered phenotypes in ways not previously imagined. In the past decade, we have obtained reference genomes for a number of plant species which can now serve as the basis for comparative studies within or among species and as a framework for a wide variety of functional genomics approaches. Over the past few decades rapid developments in genomic and other molecular research technologies and developments in bioinformation technologies have combined to produce a tremendous amount of information related to molecular biology. In view of these, a national conference on “Emerging Trends in Plant Sciences” is being organized to acquire stock of the current knowledge which will help us to understand the depth of nature easily.

Emerging trends in Plant Cytogenetics
Genome Biodiversity & Sustainable Development
Biotechnological approaches for Crop Improvement

Copenhagen PhD Scholarship on Bioremediation Molecular Studies

helpBIOTECH CSIR JRF/NET June 2012 Coaching

University of Copenhagen
Faculty of Life Sciences
Universitetsparken 2
2100 Copenhagen

PhD Scholarship in Molecular studies of biosurfactant control of bacterial PAH degradation in soil
Department of Agriculture and Ecology, Faculty of Life Sciences at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship commencing 1st February 2011 or soon thereafter.

The application deadline is 15 December 2010.

Project description  Petroleum hydrocarbons have been extensively exploited through human activities for many years and mineral oil contaminations of soils, sediments and groundwater represent a huge problem world-wide. Bioremediation, which is the use of living (micro)organisms for removal of contaminants from the environment, is today a cost-efficient approach to treat soil and sediments contaminated by PAHs.

Importantly the limited bioavailability / bioaccessibility of the hydrophobic PAHs represents an important bottleneck leading to low rates of pollutant loss. The challenge posed by limited PAH bioavailability / bioaccessibility may be addressed by addition or in-soil production of biosurfactants. Addition of biosurfactants is already known to lead to increased solubility of PAH compounds further stimulating biodegradation. In situ production of biosurfactants are documented to play important roles in bacterial motility, affecting attachment / detachment to surfaces and biofilm formation, whereas there are few (if any) reports addressing the significance of in situ production of biosurfactants for biodegradation at a mechanistic level.

The aim of the PhD project is to reveal the significance of in situ production of biosurfactants in PAH-degrading bacteria for their ability to access and degrade hydrophobic oil contaminants in soil as determined by degrader gene expression and contaminant turn-over.

The hosting laboratory has extensive experience in molecular microbial research related to soil microbiology in general and bacterial soil and rhizosphere colonization, metabolic and degradation activity, gene expression, etc. The project will be associated with the Center for Environmental and Agricultural Microbiology - A VKR Centre of Excellence, hosted by the laboratory and further takes advantage from ongoing project collaborations with Danish, industrial partners within in soil remediation and with international research partners in Germany and Spain.
