About CSIR-UGC : The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts a national-level joint CSIR-UGC Test (NET) for Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) and for the eligibility of Lectureship in Science subjects. Notification of the exam date and other details appears in the Employment News about 4 months before the examination.
This test is generally held twice in a year (June and December). State Level Eligibility Tests (SLET) are also conducted by the respective states with almost the same syllabus.Academic Eligibility : A minimum aggregate of 55% (50% for SC/ST candidates) in the Master's Degree in the Life Sciences (code 2).
A candidate who has appeared for the qualifying exam as in the first point above but is yet to receive the results can apply for the test and will be admitted provisionally. His / her eligibility will be subject to submission of mark sheet satisfying the first condition mentioned above.
Age Limit
(a) For Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): The upper age limit is 28 years as on July 1 / January 1 for the December / June exams respectively of the year of examination. This limit is relaxed up to 5 years in the case of SC/ST/OBC/physically handicapped and female applicants.
(b) For Lectureship (LS): Even candidates above 28 years can attempt NET for Lectureship only, as there is no upper age limit.
Scheme of the Examination :
Paper I :
An objective-type test of duration 2 hours and 15 minutes, in 2 sections, A and B. All the questions are compulsory with the cut-off mark in Paper I deciding whether Paper II is to be evaluated or not. Negative marks are assigned to wrong answers in this paper where a maximum of 200 marks can be scored. Section A - In 30 general questions, the candidate's knowledge on general information pertaining to Science, aptitude for Scientific Research, Quantitative Reasoning and Computer Science are tested. Section B - Focuses on the candidate's chosen subject. There are 70 objective-type questions, each carrying a maximum of 2 marks.
Paper II:
A paper of duration 2 hours and 30 minutes, it consists of descriptive-type questions for a maximum of 200 marks. Candidates are expected to answer 10 to 16 questions.
Examination Centres : Bangalore, Bhavnagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jammu, Jamshedpur, Karaikudi, Lucknow, Nagpur Pilani, Pune, Roorkee and Thiruvananthapuram.
Application Procedure : The notification is published in Employment News and leading newspapers. Candidates must apply in the application format given in the advertisement in accordance with the rules mentioned. The examination fee must be paid in the form of a crossed Demand Draft in f/o Finance & Accounts Officer, EMR, CSIR Complex, New Delhi. General Category candidates have to pay Rs 400/-, OBC candidates have to pay Rs 200/- and SC/ST/physically/visually handicapped candidates a fee of Rs 100/-.
